A short history of Golden Sands
Golden Sands (Bulgarian: Zlatni pyasatsi) is a major seaside resort on Bulgaria's northern Black Sea coast, in Varna municipality, 17 km from the city centre. Pliny mentioned the forests between ancient Odessos and Dionysopolis, and Byzantine sources name a local fortress, Gerania, whose ramparts and a 4th–7th-century basilica survive on the edge of the Franga plateau. Under Ottoman rule the area was called Uzunkum, 'long sands', and it stayed largely uninhabited until the 1950s. The forest was protected in 1943, resort construction began in 1957, and within two decades hotels, villas, a yacht marina and a riding school had appeared. The resort was privatised in the 1990s. Varna is twinned with Kharkiv, and many of the resort's guests come from Ukraine.
Sights and local features
The beach is said to have the purest quartz sand on the coast, and the resort deliberately stays largely pedestrian. Woods cascade from the Franga plateau into the 13.2 km? Golden Sands Nature Park, home to some 400 plant species. Three kilometres west is the Aladzha cave monastery, active from at least the 12th century; nearby are the modern Chapel of St John the Baptist, the Aquapolis water park and hot mineral springs.
